Burana Tower

Burana Tower

Burana Tower was built in 11 century in the centre of the thriving city on the Great Silk Road - Balasagun. During centuries traders were coming to that city to sell their goods or spend a night. At that time height of the Tower  was 45 meters high but because of the earthquake in 15 century half of it fallen down and it only 24 meters high now. Citizens used Tower as a sign for travelers and traders, as a watching tower and as a place to call local people to pray. After the earthquake in the 15 century people were scared to stay in the city. They thought that God damned the city and did not want them to live there. That is way all of them ran away in a hurry and did not take the majority of their belongings. Our archeologist found many artifacts there and you can see some of them in a local museum. The other part of artifacts was taken to Russia in Soviet time. All the buildings in the city beside the Tower and mausoleums were build of clay and they melt because of time. Now you can see only the tower and a hill nearby that is supposed to be khan's palace.

Also it is possible to visit there the unique cemetery of Balbans. Balaban is a Stone Warrior. In the 7 century people used to make them for honored dead soldiers. They were found in different parts of Kyrgyzstan and archeologists took them to this place in order to save them for next generation.

Nearby you will see nice collections of the ancient petrogliphs - stone paintings. Some of them are pretty old and dating 8 century B.C. They also were taken to the Balasagun city to be presented for tourists and travelers.
