The space surrounding the mosque is lower than the surrounding streets and at the level of the city in the 12th Century. Excavations in the early 20th Century began, only the tip of the mosque was visible.
Inside the mosque, visitors some of the excavations that have been left exposed and an exhibition of Bukhara carpets and prayer rugs.
More
Really, there are many other attractions in Bukhara see, these are just some of the highlights!
Khiva
Billed as "open air museum" Khiva is more than 2,500 years old, with a population of nearly 40,000 people. Along with Samarkand and Bukhara, Khiva is an important and often overlooked historical site of what was once the Great Silk Road. Famous for its long and brutal history as a slave trading post between the vast deserts of Karakum and Kyzylkum pinched Khiva is now a quiet, sleepy oasis that busloads of tourists take caravans of captives expected.
It is difficult to imagine what was just like old Khiva, scrubbed taking into account the historical areas and restored to a squeaky-clean look of the Soviets in the 1970s. However, giving the clustered number of mosques, madrassas and tiled minarets within an area of less than 3km you a sense of how closely this lively city and has been throughout its history.
Khiva is split into two different sections: one is the older museum Ichon-Qala or Itchan Kala (literally in the wall), where impressive examples of Islamic architecture were built over the span of 600 years, and modern Dichon-Qala ( literally: outside the wall), where both the majority of the population lives and where all the modern buildings exist, but look at the size of Khiva stay as a center of Islamic power still. Today the city is home to about 40,000 people. It's a quick 35 km from the state capital Urgench and only 5 km from the border with Turkmenistan.
