7 - Tillya Kari mosque and madrasa
Tillya Kari is decorated with gold, and it is no exaggeration. The interior of the mosque is a dazzling one-of-a-kind mosaic of blue and gold. It was restored in 1979, but the colors are already fading.
The visit of the Registan
The dome of the azure Tillya Kari mosque
In the Middle Ages was the Registan was the heart of Samarkand trade and it was probably a wall-to-wall Bazaar. It is not like now, but the tourism industry is definitely on you, with souvenir shops silk, carpets, daggers, ceramics, magnets and the like.
Access to the Registan is 4000 som, which you can access all four buildings. The minarets are not open for visitors, but for 1500 you som could convince the guards you loose. Come early.
Early in the day is the best time ever. The sunrise is the azure domes even more of a fairytale appearance, and you get the midday heat and beat the tour groups. Watching the square to wake up and get ready for the day is eating a watermelon ready is another attraction.
With the restoration of the mosque and madrasa was the complaint by some tourists that the Registan Square was over-restored. It's a bit too squeaky clean, especially knowing what kind of everyday madness came here 600 years earlier. But for that you have the bazaar.
